TEAM DEVELOPMENT
“None of us is as smart as all of us”
- Ken Blanchard
We work with teams of 5 to 500 in all types of organizations. Our
Team Development works well for:
•
One-time team building activities
•
Full-scale professional development programs
•
Team coaching and consulting.
“Michael, if you can’t pass, you can’t play”
- University of North Carolina Men’s Basketball Coach
Dean Smith to
Michael Jordan in his freshman year
Teamwork is always better than any individual effort. Michael Jordan
may have been the greatest basketball player of all time, but he
didn’t win an NBA Championship until he learned to play within the
structure of the team.
Teams are comprised of individuals, the relationships between them,
and the team collective. For your team to reach its potential,
you’ll need to address the entire team anatomy through individuals
developing:
•
Individual self-awareness & self-management
•
Understanding others & how to work with them
•
Learning how to leverage team strengths & compensate for weaknesses
If your team has all of these skills you do not need Team
Development.
However, if your team could do better in these areas, maybe you
could use some assistance. Many team leaders struggle with how to
get the most out of their team. They aren’t sure where to begin, or
they’ve tried a number of things but nothing seems to work.
You are a good candidate for Team Development if:
•
You manage a professional team from 5 to 500 people
•
Your team’s success depends on working well together
•
You’re willing to invest time, money and energy into building a team
people love to be a part of
•
You’re willing to work outside your comfort zone
•
You are patient and understand that results take time
We use the “4-Steps of Successful Teams Model”.
This model has
served to support the professional development of thousands of
people.
1.
The Enneagram
(“any-a-gram”) – The map to understanding
The first thing you need is a solid theoretical framework to
understand yourself and others – the key to future success. We are
all individuals at our core, and there is a structure that allows us
to go beyond our surface-level awareness to see motivations,
strengths, and challenges. You’ll learn the system and your type.
2.
Professional Applications
– Making the theory come alive
Our type lives within us 24 hours a day. Knowing how to recognize it
and work with it results in professional development. Enneagram
application topics include:
•
Communication
•
Feedback
•
Conflict
•
Leadership
•
Team Roles
•
Team Goals & Inter-dependence
•
The 4 Stages of team Development (forming, storming, norming,
performing.)
Take a look at our Team Development curriculum for a brief
description of each.
3.
Workplace Relevance
– The rubber hits the road with real issues
Now you have the skills, and can put them to use in the workplace.
•
What are the strengths of your team?
•
Where are its challenges?
•
What does the Enneagram tell you about how to leverage strengths and
overcome challenges?
4.
Life-Long Learning
– The road to self-mastery
You’ve completed the first three stages of the cycle. Now it’s time
to go further. The dynamics of the Enneagram allow for continuous
growth opportunities to deepen your base-line knowledge, expand your
application skills, and make it come alive in the workplace. As you
are ready, the curriculum expands to include our
Leadership
Development programs.
Team Development Format and Results
The sessions are held in person and last a full day. We can also
accommodate half-day or multi-day sessions, as well as facilitating
over the phone for “work from home” organizations.
Frequency of the sessions depends on your specific situation. They
range from one-time team building events to extended professional
development programs to on-going team coaching. Sessions build on
each other as described in the 4-Steps of Successful Teams Model
above.
You will see results as soon as we start working with each other.
Your team will immediately experience greater self-awareness and
start catching themselves in the act of their typical emotions,
thoughts, and behaviors--the first step to self-management.
As we continue to work together, self-awareness and self-management
grow. The team is able to relate with one another more
authentically. As we move into Step 3, group dynamics are understood
at a deeper level. Each team member knows how they can positively
impact the group.
After working all 4 steps of the Successful Teams Model, your team
will have the skills they need to be professionally successful and
fulfilled. You will experience performance that you didn’t think
possible.
Getting over Obstacles to Team Development
The biggest challenges your team faces in today’s environment are
internal and that’s what this program addresses:
•
What gets in your way?
•
How can you communicate better?
•
How can you grow your skills to become a more effective team member
and leader?
•
What do you need to do in order to relate to others more
authentically?
You’ll answer all of these questions for yourself and ask even more
as you embark on continuous development.
Getting Started
Start out with a one-time team building event; half-day, full-day or
multiple-day session. You’ll get a sound introduction to this
material with a number of applications. Your team will glean a new
awareness of themselves and each other. They will have fun in the
process. It’s a great way to take this program out for a test drive.
Build off that first session with additional regular sessions;
monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, etc. The more experience your
team gets with the system, the more benefits they receive, and it
becomes engrained in your work environment.
Take some time to apply the materials in your organization. We can
look at your team structure, create visions and missions, work on
conflict resolution, and build healthy working relationships. This
happens near the end of a training session or as a complete session
on its own.
