FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS – COACHING
Q: What are the benefits of Solution Points’ Coaching?
A: Our coaching process allows the coach to help the
client develop and grow in a number of ways, including:
•
Increasing self-awareness of goals, values, talents, limiting
beliefs, perspectives, and emotions
•
Integrating the 3 centers of intelligence of head, heart, and body
•
Developing and expanding our range of skills to include our wings,
arrows and eventually all 9 types
•
Balancing the 3 instincts of self-preservation, sexual, and social
•
Releasing the constraints of our type to allow our best selves to
emerge, so we can live more fulfilling, balanced, and authentic
lives.
In short, the “goal” of coaching is to deepen the client’s learning
and move the client forward on their path of development.
Q: What is a typical coaching call like?
A: It starts with us each getting present then I’ll
ask what you’d like coaching on and you’ll give me a topic. And, if
you don’t have a topic on the tip of your tongue, we’ll explore a
little to find something meaningful – using the Discovery materials
can help here. Then, we’ll open up the topic and start exploring.
This open-ended exploration results in deep insights and natural
next steps. The key is to stay open, be present, stay flexible, be
curious, and even playful. We’ll use the Enneagram to the extent you
wish. If you have specific Enneagram questions or issues, we’ll work
with those. If you’d like me to point out how Enneagram type-related
themes are arising in your experience, I can do that too. It is up
to you. At the end of our call, we’ll agree on some homework or an
inquiry to lock in the learning and move things forward. It tends to
be challenging and fun; not mundane.
Q: What is expected of me as a client?
A: In addition to the Enneagram, my coaching is rooted
in “CoActivity”; which means that we are equal partners in this
relationship. Be as open, present, flexible, and curious as you can
possibly be. Engage or be willing to explore why you aren’t. If
possible, have a topic for coaching before each call. Anticipate
that you’ll receive benefits from coaching. And, if you are not able
to make a scheduled coaching session, give me at least 24 hours
notice.
Q: What is the difference between coaching and psychotherapy?
A: There is definitely overlap, because each is a
process in which a professional is focused on helping the client
work through issues and develop a better sense of well-being. But
there are also clear differences too. First of all, as a coach, I
will not work with a client on any sort of mental disorder or
pathology. Also, I don’t spend much, if any, time working on a past
wound with a client. Coaching is focused on the present and the
future. And, the goal of coaching is a wonderful, completely
fulfilling life; whereas much of therapy is just to overcome
something that is holding them back.
Q: What is the difference between talking to a coach and talking to
a friend?
A: A coach is a trained professional who is there to
serve your learning and moving forward in your life. A coach does
more than listen; a coach engages with, challenges, champions, and
whatever else is needed to help you meet your goals. And, the
coaching relationship is all about you! It isn’t a reciprocal
relationship that is a friendship.
All people need friends; they are critically important for a
fulfilling, healthy, well-rounded life. A coach cannot replace
friends. But a coach can help you make friends or improve
relationships with friends if that is your goal.
Q: What are some ethical guidelines for coaching?
A: I am a member of the International Coaching
Federation and agree to abide by their ethical guidelines. You can
read their
guidelines.
